I think the problem is that the lines that you posted had the end units so that the hole was horizontal. To me it seems horizontal hole are easier to slip into rather than vertical ones. I think it has to do with the dimensions of the map that the unit has more coverage, where it will join with another unit, vertically than it does horizontally. I know this sounds confusing but i think the easiest fix would be to make the coverage range into an oval instead of a circle.
