Those of you who aren't living under a rock know that today Scotland will vote for independence from the greater United Kingdom. As of right now the outcome of the vote is up in the air. This thread is for discussing the AW competitive implications of a yes vote. I think it is fair to assume that if Scotland does vote yes and carries through with secession the default AW map and thus the Eu+ competitive map will be significantly altered as was the case with the world map and Sudan not too long ago. The question becomes how will this affect gameplay? Will we be better off (I know some people think the UK is too powerful as compared to Germany)? Will the UK still be a popular pick (It should lose about 10% of it's reinforcements and a small part of its economy)? Will Scotland become another Ireland that can be rushed by the opponent first turn be it France or Germany? Will this ruin the UK and make Italy, Poland, or Russia a more popular pick? Note that this is NOT a debate Scotland's independence thread. Take that to off topic. It is a discussion of what a yes vote could mean as the biggest change to the competitive map in recent memory.

It will make UK cheaper, perhaps cheap enough for iron Fist to be a good strategy? Could spain Naval commander reach scotland turn 1? Will scotland become the new unkraine?

I definitely think that it could be a huge change to competitive gameplay. UK will be forced to either leave an open country to the north which could possibly (and very likely imo) be rushed by Germany and France often or drastically change its expansion. One of UK's biggest advantages is that it is alone on its own island. This forces the opponent to either take an hold UK's cities to force pressure, which can rarely be done early as Germany, or create pressure through sea transports in Hamburg or less often Amsterdam. An independent Scotland would be a great advantage for UK's enemies, as rushing it first turn will allow them to put very early pressure on UK and have the ability to produce sea transport to return to their home country. Holding Scotland would make it easy for Germany or France to transport units back and forth between the UK and their homecountry. It's also possible that someone may use blitz Spain and rush it as well. This would open up so many options for UK's enemies but also could open up a new option for UK's allies that would be a great help when facing Germany. A France taking Scotland and allied with UK could put pressure on Germany while being able to easily return to Paris. So, overall, I think that it would be interesting and force competitive gameplay to change. Germany-UK might not be considered OP anymore. It'd be interesting to see how competitive players adapt to a change like this. It definitely might make Poland and Italy viable choices vs Germany.

This reminds me of the debate about kosovo/serbia well it will surely weaken the UK leaving it with 6 less units 1st turn (3+reinf) Also I would like to see Edinburgh added (if the separation is to happen) and maybe more cities (i don't know Scotland that well though). Looks to me that if germany decides to go for Scotland it will lose a lot of presence in scandinavia, it would be more viable, imo, to rush it with france like you do nowadays with ireland

I think it's clear to everyone that this will have drastic effects on UK. I hope that Scotland decides to stay as a part of the United Kingdom, but if it doesn't, it'll be really interesting to see the change implemented in the game. It will very much be possible that France becomes the preferred pick over UK. Also, we should also consider whether Scotland would be occupied by neutral infantry or militia. Good thread.

I'd like to hope that the admins keep UK the way it is even if the vote is Yes. In 1v1 especially, Germany can easily overpower UK as is

Don't try and derail my thread buddy. Those are highly contested nations/borders and while important they are not for this discussion.

It would be occupied by militia Leaf. This would improve the UK in 1 vs 1s and bring the focus and wealth even closer together. Sure it'll be more interruptible in 3 vs 3s (rushing neutrals with France/Spain) but it'll cost less. Think of a richer Spain. Don't be mistaken, it'll still be the power pick against Germany in 3 vs 3s despite losing a part of its first turn reinforcements. It does make France and Spain a little more dangerous to it in 3 vs 3s, but UK vs Germany in 3 vs 3 will only change slightly.

if scotland votes for independence it will be contested among the british community so if scotland gets added there must be an addition for places like kosovo

I am interested to see how players adapt to it if it happens, certainly UK will be weaker on a turn 1 rush but perhaps it is easier to defend will less of a full country, all depends on today

The cities that would become Scotland, I wouldn't miss them. Usually use them to rush whatever first turn and then they just help keep birm defended. As far as gameplay goes, I highly doubt anybody would rush it first turn unless they have bad luck of getting tb'd in ireland. Also in 5k games, you can pick Scotland and save yourself 220/250. UK might be cheap enough to be full of milita which would make Scotland a powerhouse pick Since you can easily get full original UK faster. I see a bigger change for west 5k games than 10k games tbh.

Creyente just said this reminded him of an earlier discussion regarding Kosovo. Commando was venturing into normative claims about what countries should be included in the AW map which is NOT the purpose of this thread. Do not test my patience with your provoking posts

This is exactly the kind of thing I was interested in. UK has another threat to deal with first turn. I think the country could be more viable in 1v1 costing less but a whole lots less appealing in 3v3

Dude kosovo is independent just like Scotland might be or not. So why make this only for Scotland and leave the rest behind? Devs didnt update the mao when kosovo got independent and i surely doubt they will uodate it if Scotland gets independent. Dure that might change the competitive eu+ but if u do it for one country then u gotta do it for all of them. And another thing, you are a mod so maintain your attitude as one. I dont wanna see you writing childish comments anymore. Capish? Thanks
