Are the average cheap map that takes 1 hour to make in the most played page?

(Examples: maps made by aramen,om champion, or any other player that levels up playimg un)

Don't bother asking that question when you know the answer already
They aren't worth playing if it's made by UN players

This brings me back to the basic question: how do we define good maps/scenarios?
Some criteria can be:
  • Graphically well elaborated (background image, country/city images, units images, etc.)
  • Creativity: taking an existing map/scenario and moving some stuff around or elaborating it from scratch
  • Usability: number of units (lacking, to much or just the ones needed/welcome), using "standard" units that respond to strategies, drawing of borders (allowing or not a smooth movement of troops), etc.
  • Balance: right balance of territories, their incomes and reinforcement rates, so that there is a challenge to manage well the expenditures, strategic movements of troops and that there is a balance between players (or teams) and the territories they manage
  • Popularity: community is willing to play them!

It will always be a mix of these issues (probably missing some more).

Balance is the most difficult issue of a map and scenario-making process; and, unfortunately, it is the aspect that recieves less attention by most of the map/scenario makers (including myself). The reason: it is boring and apparently has nothing to do with creative (and visible) work.
There are some few players that have the capacity to balance maps, one of them is Malice!

They need to provide good incentives (financial preferably) to encourage good map making.

they should copy youtubes example, after lets say 80 plays you get 3 protocoins for each play, which you can use in game or redeem as hard cuccrency, it would work by people paying to make maps and very few maps actually getting more that 80 plays

Your maps aren't exactly greatest ever. Even with incentives, the scheme would only benefit players who made popular games and can earn constant PC that way (eg: LOTR, Ancient World). Featured maps (decided by mods) would also have huge influences.

I know that my maps are the greatest but there's no incentive for me to spend that extra time perfecting a map. I think that maps should NOT be featured by mods, because they re often very bias it should be based on maps which have been played (top 15) the most in the previous week by people other than the creator.

This issue is being discussed by Mods; featuring maps according to popularity, from different categories, rotating among maps (to promote a diversity of maps), "giving maps a chance of visibility", defining selection criteria (like usability, popularity, quality, originality, balance, etc.) for featuring maps, etc.

And to be very honest (talking beyond the "...the mods, the mods, the terrible and biased mods, etc."). Where is the problem with the following page 1 of maps? (It is a sincere question; not rethorical.)

    • Lunatis: payed promo (beyond MOD power)
    • The Great War: payed promo (beyond MOD power)
    • World Map: the most popular of all (beyond MOD power)
    • Medieval Europe 1150: a great map by Primal (featured by MODs)
    • Greek World: cool stuff by Talos (featured by MODs)
    • New America: a realistic modern type of map (featured by MODs)
    • EC's Ancient World: another excellent work by Talos (featured by MODs)
    • Roman World: new map by Francisco Franco (featured by MODs)
    • Not featured games (by popularity) Ancient World, Battle for middle Earth, Song of Ice and Fire, Epic Ancient World and Age of Empires

    Is this list so bad?
Please feel free to suggest other mechanisms for featuring maps/scenarios. We do very much welcome suggestions.

    Cheers.

Can you explain to use how maps are featured? :/

There has been a discussion on among some Mods about this issue. Just some discussions we had can be summed up this way:
    • The main idea is not to feature to many maps and that the world-map will always be a featured map.
    • The other maps to be featured are those that (hopefully) belong to a wider range of categories (trying to choose maps for Ancient World, Fantasy Worlds, Medieval, World Maps, Space, Detailed World Maps and Huge Country Map, etc.).
    • Featured maps do not necessarily coincide with the most played maps (popularity); featuring is rather a map-promotion strategy to let the community know new maps.
    • Furthermore, these featured maps will be changed with a certain periodicity, which has still not been established.
    • All this will be done by some Mods that are very much into map-making and that like very much trying-out new maps. There are several Mods that do not really enjoy playing new maps and they decided not to get involved in this map-promotion stuff.
    • Al the above, considering that maps cannot "only" be listed according to feature, but also popularity and other criteria and that, in the future, more and more maps will be "promoted" by its makers or other players.
    • Finally, "featuring of maps" is a tool for Mods to let the community know new maps in the different categories and it does not compete with popularity, which has its own dynamics.

Concluding, it is an ongoing process that is being discussed among Mods and with the wider community through personal interaction (like this one).

    Cheers.

Well as of right now how EXACTLY does a map go from being a non featured map to being a featured map. details!!! As far as I know the handful of mods who play non default maps just pick and choose what maps they like themselves and players they like and there is no discussion with other mods or players. Do mods just clcik a little box to make it featured? Do they ask amok to feature it?

Mods discuss the maps, click a little tiny box and a map becomes featured or un-featured... Mods pick maps they know, think that they are good and, THUS, like playing them. Furthermore, Mods - as normal players also - have their reference-community and read the forums, where new maps/scenarios are presented and discussed...
...admins rarely get into map-featuring; they do not have the time for that, nor the playing-knowledge of most of the non default maps. With exceptions.

Columna, I respect that whilst you have the decency to not self feature your own maps, it hurts to see the custom maps sector by and large ignored by many mods. In fact, only you, Safari and Meester known to care (Pulse and Spart frequent inactive). Mods have also frequent changed status of featured maps whilst other people less observant don't realise.

Mods (in general) simply don't vote on map contests, nor do they regulate the maps well enough. As for admins, they know that only about 20% of all created maps are of acceptable quality, they just use "Hundreds of user-created maps" as gimmick for advertising.

Mods are just people who aren't perfect but some maps should be featured at all, like "imperial era" which has no custom borders, the same is to "true world war 2", there are far more deserving maps to be featured like WW1 by pistlr, or der weltkrieg (both maps have accurate custom borders), also i never really see mod playing scenarios, they might be but i never see it so how can a mod pick a good map?

Also that mapping contest come infrequently and i dont think that the mods really care, it should be down to a general vote which anyone can vote for the submitted maps

What I don't like about you (I have seen you do this too) is that you host your maps, then once they fill you start then leave them to play it. Then you immediately go back to lobby and host the same map or another one of your maps, fill it and repeat. Its like you are farming plays for your map. Its honestly weird and kind of pathetic man.

But your maps are generally alright though, but nothing spectacular.
